Hop Pellets
| Preparation: | leaf hops are cleaned, milled and then pelleted, cooled and packaged |
| Major Role: | to provide bitterness and hop aroma to beer |
| Method of Use: | addition to boiling wort in the kettle |
COMPOSITION |
| T-90: | as for leaf hops except: |
| - | slightly lower moisture content |
| - | resin glands are ruptured and lupulin is spread over particles |
|
| T-45: |
| - | about 40 - 50% of the plant vegetable matter is removed |
| - | resin/oil concentration is virtually doubled |
| |
| Intermediate enrichment grades between T-90 and T-45 are available more or less upon request. |
|
|
ADVANTAGES |
| - | significant volume reduction from leaf hops enhanced further under enrichment, leads to ease of shipping, handling and disposal |
| - | packaging methods improve storage stability |
| - | standardization of product is easy so better control of bitterness |
| - | utilization of bitterness is enhanced (30-35%) |
| - | cost of iso alpha-acids in beer is similar to leaf hops |
|
DISADVANTAGES |
| - | products still bulky compared to extracts |
| - | possible contamination with pesticides, nitrates, radioactivity and dust |
| - | wort losses compared with extracts |
| - | modified behaviour in brewing process |
